NinjaTrader review 2026: a futures platform with a free plan that holds up

Our score: 9.8/10

NinjaTrader is a Chicago futures platform and broker, founded in 2003 and owned by Kraken's parent company Payward since 2025. It tops our ranking because the $0 Free plan already includes the charting, the SuperDOM and an unlimited simulator. You pay more per contract instead of per month. For Canadians, the open question is the account behind the software rather than the software itself.

What we like

  • Free plan with a $0 platform fee and unlimited simulated trading
  • SuperDOM ladder for fast futures order entry
  • NinjaScript C# framework plus thousands of third-party add-ons
  • Lifetime licence drops micro commissions to $0.09 per side
  • Desktop, web and mobile apps stay in sync

Drawbacks

  • Desktop app is Windows-only; Mac users get the web platform
  • Own brokerage reportedly limited to Ontario residents in Canada
  • Exchange, clearing and NFA fees come on top of every commission
  • Market list is futures only; stocks and options are not on it

Plans and what they really cost

NinjaTrader charges for the platform through commissions. On the Free plan a micro futures contract costs $0.39 per side and a standard contract $1.29. The Monthly plan ($99/mo) lowers those to $0.29 and $0.99, and the Lifetime licence ($1,499 once) takes them to $0.09 and $0.59. Exchange, clearing and NFA fees are added on every plan.

The maths is simple. On micros, Monthly saves $0.10 per side over Free, so it only pays for itself at about 990 sides a month. Most part-time traders should stay on Free until their own trade log says otherwise.

Charting, the SuperDOM and NinjaScript

The desktop platform is where NinjaTrader earns its rating. The SuperDOM puts the order book and your working orders on one price ladder, and you place or move orders with a click. NinjaScript is a C# framework, so custom indicators and strategies are written in a mainstream language rather than a house dialect. If you would rather not code, thousands of third-party add-ons cover most retail futures needs, and a built-in strategy builder handles simpler rule sets.

The simulator and the live data trial

Simulated trading is free and unlimited on every plan, which makes NinjaTrader the cheapest way in our six to practise futures execution. Live streaming data is a separate matter: the 14-day free trial starts when you open an account, so schedule your serious evaluation inside those two weeks.

Using NinjaTrader from Canada

This is the weak spot. According to Finder's Canadian guide (updated October 2025), NinjaTrader's own brokerage is available to Ontario residents only. NinjaTrader forum staff point other Canadians to Interactive Brokers or GFF Brokers, which the platform supports. For most of the country that means a platform relationship with one company and an account with another. We have not confirmed provincial eligibility ourselves, so ask NinjaTrader before you fund anything.

The desktop app is Windows-only. Mac users can trade through the web platform, and the iOS and Android apps sync with the same workspace, but test the web version during the trial before you pay for a plan.

Bottom line

NinjaTrader is the strongest all-round futures platform we tested, and the Free plan is the reason. Pick it if you trade CME futures and are comfortable on Windows. If you live outside Ontario, set up an account at Interactive Brokers or GFF Brokers before you start, because the platform is only half of the arrangement.
