Our score: 8.8/10

The team behind it started in 1999 and launched MultiCharts in 2005. MultiCharts, LLC is based in Westerville, Ohio, with MCT Limited registered in Gibraltar.

What a backtest looks like here

Strategies are written in PowerLanguage or, in MultiCharts .NET, in C# or VB.NET, with Python in beta. Once a strategy runs, the optimiser can search its parameters with a genetic method instead of trying every combination. Walk-forward testing then checks whether the chosen settings hold up on data the optimiser never saw, which is the step most home-built tests skip. Portfolio Trader runs the same logic across many symbols at once.

Bar replay lets you step through history and trade it by hand. It is a good way to sanity-check a system before you trust its equity curve, and our guide to backtesting traps covers what to look for.

Pricing and the no-refund rule

Standard costs $99 a month, or $79 a month billed annually; Advanced is $149, or $119 billed annually. Lifetime licences are $1,499 and $1,999, paid in one go. The same tiers cover MultiCharts and MultiCharts .NET, and switching between them costs $200. Market data is a separate $49/mo add-on. The line that matters most is the refund policy, because there is none. Use the 30-day trial in full before you pay.

Brokers and Canadian use

MultiCharts trades through outside brokers, and its brokers page lists Interactive Brokers and TradeStation among others. No Canadian broker such as Questrade appears there, so Interactive Brokers is the obvious route for Canadians. The free plan, limited to simulated trading and sample data, is enough to learn PowerLanguage before you connect anything. Stocks are reached only through a broker connection, which is one more reason to settle the broker question early.

Who should skip it

MultiCharts runs on Windows only, and its interface assumes you already think in strategies. If you mostly read charts by eye or follow ready-made signals, the free plan at NinjaTrader or a browser account at StockCharts will cost less and ask less of you. Newcomers to scripting can still learn here, but expect the first weeks to go on PowerLanguage rather than on trading.

Bottom line

MultiCharts is the strongest choice here for traders who build and test systems, and its walk-forward tools are the deepest in our six. It drops to fifth place because of what surrounds that core: Windows only, data billed separately and no refunds. If you write strategies seriously, or plan to, the 30-day trial will tell you quickly whether it earns the price.
