Order flow basics
What a DOM ladder, a footprint chart and a volume profile actually show, and which of our six platforms handle each one.
Updated October 9, 2026
We put six desktop and browser platforms through the same 12-point test and priced every plan on the vendors' own pages. NinjaTrader leads this year. If you mostly follow TSX stocks, StockCharts is the easier place to start.
Most comparison pages stop at a feature list. Ours start with the questions I had when I set up my own screens: which broker will this connect to from Canada, and what will the data cost once the trial ends?
Every platform goes through the same four stages, and the managing editor checks every number before it goes live.
We register through the public sign-up page, start the free plan or trial, and connect a simulated account or the cheapest data feed the vendor supports. No press accounts, no special builds.
The reviewing editor builds layouts and places simulated orders, then runs whatever backtester or scanner the platform ships with. Rough edges tend to show up in week two.
Each criterion gets a score from 1 to 10 and a written reason. A second editor then checks every price and feature claim against the vendor's own pages.
Plans and fees are checked again each month. A changed fee or a new tier means the review is updated and redated, and the ranking is recalculated.
Short, practical reads for the decisions that come before you pick a platform.

Six ways a strategy test can look better than it will ever trade, and the settings that expose each one.
What TSX and US feeds add to the software bill, and which vendors leave the data question to your broker.
Six platforms, ordered by their average across our 12 criteria. Each name opens the full review; each button goes to the vendor's own site.
Prices as listed on each vendor's site on October 9, 2026. Most vendors don't state the currency, so confirm it at checkout.
NinjaTrader scores highest because its free tier is usable on its own, with no platform fee. The catch for Canadians is the brokerage side. Its own brokerage reportedly accepts Ontario residents only, so traders in other provinces usually connect through Interactive Brokers or another supported broker.
View NinjaTraderStockCharts asks the least of a new user. There is nothing to install, and each paid tier adds more scans and alerts rather than more complexity. If you later want to automate a strategy, NinjaTrader or MultiCharts is the next step.
View StockChartsMotiveWave gives the most platform per dollar if you buy rather than lease. A one-time Standard licence costs about what ten months of leasing would, and the Community edition stays free after the 14-day trial. Budget for data separately, since MotiveWave does not include it.
View MotiveWaveThrough affiliate commissions. Some links to vendor sites are tracked, and if you subscribe after clicking one, the vendor may pay us a fee. Your price stays the same. Positions come from the 12 scores, and no vendor can buy a better one.
Prices and plan terms are rechecked every month, and each platform gets a full re-test at least once a year. The latest full pass finished on October 9, 2026.
StockCharts, for most Canadians. It runs in a browser and is the only one of our six with an official real-time TSX and TSX-V feed ($9.95/mo add-on). Tickeron is the other beginner-level pick, for people who prefer ready-made pattern signals to drawing their own charts.
Yes. Email info@chartcompass.co with the platform name. A platform joins the shortlist once it publishes its prices and offers a trial or free tier we can use without a sales call.
No. We sign up through the same public pages you would. When a trial does not cover what we score, we pay for the tier ourselves.
No. A spot on this site cannot be bought or reserved. Where a commission arrangement exists, it has no bearing on where a platform lands.
At least 30 days per platform, mostly on simulated accounts. That covers a full billing cycle and usually one software update.
Each platform is scored from 1 to 10 on the same 12 criteria. The overall score is the plain average, and the star rating is that average divided by two. Every review shows its full score table.
We keep the ranking to six so each review can stay current. Tools without a public price list, or that cannot be tried without a salesperson, are left out.
We do not publish user reviews or reader star ratings. Every score here comes from our own testing, with the reasons written out on each review page.
All six platforms on our list have a free plan or free level, and NinjaTrader's is the most complete of them. Open it on a simulated account and build one layout you would really use before you pay for anything.
Trading stocks, options, futures, forex or crypto carries a high risk of losing money, and leveraged products such as futures and CFDs can lose more than you deposit. ChartCompass reviews software only; nothing on this site is investment advice or a recommendation to buy or sell any security.
